Following the success of our last 3 years holding Coffee and Cake mornings in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, this year we decided to do something a little different. After watching the Stand Up To Cancer episodes of Great British Bake Off on Channel 4, I was inspired to raise some money for them and the life-saving cancer research they carry out. Instead of a traditional cake and biscuit bake off like we have done in previous years, I decided to hold a savoury bake off this time. This was mainly so we could eat more of the bakes without feeling sick!

Our Savoury Bake Off was held on Monday and it was a great success! Lots of the M12 and Giganet team baked and bought in savoury treats, including sausage rolls, mini pizzas, sausage pesto pasta, cheese and bacon splats, cheese twists, cheese scones and more. (There was a lot of cheese!) We also held a raffle, with prizes generously donated by local businesses, including k:SPA, Trenchers, Fresh To Desk, Solent Hotel & Spa and Chocolate Heaven. Our MD Andrew also donated some vouchers for members of staff to come in an hour late or leave an hour early.

Throughout the day we were tasting the various bakes and voting for our favourite treat so that one baker would win the coveted Star Baker title and prize! The winner was our Giganet Inside Sales Manager Sarah, who won with over half of the votes. Her cheese and bacon splats were delicious and very moreish. Sarah was very excited to have won the title, and a Trenchers voucher too for her efforts.

We asked for donations to be able to eat the bakes, plus sold over 100 raffle tickets. At the end of the day we counted up all the money raised and the grand total was…£155! A pretty good total, especially as not everyone was in the office that day. It’s now 2 days later and we are still polishing off the savoury treats that everyone brought in.

The day was great fun, but on a serious note, the work of Stand Up To Cancer is very important in the fight against cancer. Stand Up To Cancer takes developments in the labs and accelerates them into brand new tests and treatments for cancer patients who need them right now. Originating in the USA, Stand Up To Cancer launched in the UK in 2012 and since then has raised over £38M which has gone towards showing cancer who’s boss!

If you would like to make a donation towards Stand Up To Cancer then please click here or text TWENTY or TEN to 70404 to donate £20 or £10. 100% of the money raised goes towards life saving cancer research.
