ADSL to ADSL Failover | ADSL | M12 Solutions

ADSL to ADSL Failover is one of the next big things in ADSL broadband technology.

Traditionally, ADSL broadband connections have not been that reliable that many businesses expect. Where businesses have needed an improved Internet connection, they have chosen a leased line solution, but at the huge expense of having one that only medium or large businesses can afford.

ADSL to ADSL Failover is a solution that hopes to increase the service availability of an ADSL broadband connection by diversifying the Internet suppliers and providing the same IP address across the two connections, whilst providing the low cost of using ADSL technology.

How it works

ADSL to ADSL Failover works by having two broadband lines from different carriers, thus providing carrier diversity in the case of a fault in one of the carriers backhaul network, or along the PSTN line providing the connection. (This is often the cause of most ADSL failures.)

These two broadband connections attach to a compatible failover router (that M12 Solutions can supply and install), that then attaches to your LAN providing Internet connectivity.

Same IP address - different broadband lines

Traditionally, plugging two different broadband supplies into a failover router means that you have separate IP addresses for them. This can be a problem if you are hosting services, or where services are delivered to a specific IP address such as Microsoft Exchange.

ADSL to ADSL Failover ensures that the same IP address is delivered to both ADSL broadband supplies, thus ensuring a continuation of service for your VoIP calls and/or hosted applications no matter which connection is in use, or which connection is working.

Alternatives that run risks

  1. Buy two ADSL broadband lines from one supplier and swap the router if one connection fails. Usually the fault is with the carriers backhaul network, so a fault on one of the lines will usually mean a fault on the other. Also swapping routers physically is not that useful either - you have to be on site, the experience is not seamless and there is downtime involved.
  2. Buy two ADSL broadband lines from two different suppliers and use a failover/ load balancing router. This solution is the second best option after M12 Solutions ADSL to ADSL Failover, however you will have different IP addresses for the different ADSL broadband lines. This may implicate the availability of hosted applications and/or VoIP calls.
  3. Bonded ADSL. Not readily available at every exchange, and also not ideal to work with for two different carriers as the latency difference will cause problems for services. Also packet based load balancing is not ideal for voice calls as packets can be reordered causing "jitter".
