ADSL History
When people mention Broadband, generally they are referring to an ADSL circuit.
Before 2006 the BT's network was only capable of providing download speeds of up to 2Mb/s on a non-rate-adaptive service. The costs were high and the speeds were slow, however this provided an internet connection meeting the demands of the time.
In 2006, BT upgraded its network to support a rate-adaptive service (RADSL). This allowed speeds of up to 8Mb/s, and up to 834 kb/s upload. This is primarily what most consumers use presently.
Where is it available
The BT ADSL network reaches 96% of the rural population (assuming 100% of the urban population), so it redily available. In comparision, LLU operators coverage reaches 46% of the population.
